Spanish/Nat The confessions of a man who blew the lid on drug money used to fund Ernesto Samper's Presidential campaign went on sale this week. The book by Santiago Medina details how, as Samper's campaign treasurer in 1994, he solicited six (m) million U-S dollars in donations from the Cali drug cartel. Samper denied any role in the affair and was cleared by a sympathetic Congress in 1995, despite public demands for his resignation. A new paperback went on display in bookstores around Colombia this week which details allegations linking President Ernesto Samper to the Cali drug cartel. The book "The Truth about the Lies" was written by Santiago Medina, Samper's former campaign treasurer in the electoral race of 1994. It is a rehash of revelations following Medina's 1995 arrest on illegal enrichment charges. Medina solicited six (m) million U-S dollars in donations from the Cali drug cartel. Samper denied any involvement and was cleared by a sympathetic Congress. But Medina claims Samper was very much involved. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The important part is that I show how there existed a commitment between (President Ernesto) Samper and the Cali cartel during the two years before Samper was elected President of the republic, so that the Cali cartel would finance his campaign." SUPER CAPTION: Santiago Medina, author of "The Truth about the Lies" He claims a jailed drug trafficker in Spain has video of a 1994 meeting between Samper and brothers Miguel, as seen here, and Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela, the Cali cartel kingpins who are now behind bars. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "I explain the meetings before, during and after the campaign when Samper was already elected President; how Samper tricked the Rodriguez (brothers) in many ways; how he had made a serious commitment with them because no one gives such a large sum (of money) to support a campaign in exchange for nothing. Clearly an agreement existed and so I show what this was, how it was drawn up and carried out." SUPER CAPTION: Santiago Medina, author of "The Truth about the Lies" He claims Alfonso Valdivieso, the former chief prosecutor who investigated the President, received 25-thousand U-S dollars a month from the U-S Drug Enforcement Administration. Valdivieso has denied the claim. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) "The last part deals with Alfonso Valdivieso, who is the Presidential candidate, in which I show how five months before I was arrested I asked him that he open the case on the narcotraffickers - that I was ready to tell him everything. And he immediately warned the government. The letters through which I had asked him disappeared, and copies were destroyed." SUPER CAPTION: Santiago Medina, author of "The Truth about the Lies" Medina, 47, spent four months of a five-year term behind bars but now lives under house arrest as a reward for helping investigations into the drug scandal. But fear for his own safety prevents him from sauntering out even as far as the gravel driveway. The wealthy entrepreneur now receives visitors at his home, roams the Internet, and works out on exercise machines. He expects to be paroled in February next year.
